Opera Browser Just Announced an in-browser Crypto Wallet Feature

Remember Opera? The Browser? Well, it just went techno.

Opera Browser for Android is now testing a cryptocurrency wallet feature in the browser itself. Soon the browser will allow the users to store their ERC20 and crypto tokens in the browser itself along with allowing you to send and get crypto on the go through its newly added feature that it has coined as ‘Crypto Wallet’.

To keep the cryptocurrency safe, Opera will be using your device’s passcode or biometric security.

This new feature addition is Opera’s effort to prepare its interface for the future. While in the present day, the number of websites taking crypto payments for subscriptions and payment are very few, the rate at which the technology is getting accepted is giving a hint at how mainstream crypto payments are going to be in the coming time.

The Opera crypto wallet supports Ethereum Web3 API, which is a collection of various libraries which allow the blockchain developers to connect with the remote or local Ethereum nodes.

Once the feature is released for public use, users will no more have to download some separate extension for sending, receiving, or paying the currency or for opening a website, they will be able to do all of this straight through a toggle on their Opera browser on Mobile.

Commenting on the new feature, Charles Hamel, the Product Lead of Opera Crypto said, “We believe the web of today will be the interface to the decentralized web of tomorrow. By becoming the first major browser to open up to Web 3.0, we would like to contribute to making the internet of the future more accessible. Our hope is that this will accelerate the transition of cryptocurrencies from speculation and investment to being used for actual payments and transactions in our users’ daily lives.”

The move comes right after the January launch of Opera 50 with the feature that blocks the websites that uses your computer’s CPU elements to mine the cryptocurrencies. With steps as these, Opera is clearly hinting towards making itself a pro-blockchain platform. An intention that is comes only a lot closer to be turned into reality with Opera becoming the first browser to have Blockchain elements.

Will the feature expand to Opera Desktop Browser? Not as of now.

The brand will probably wait and check the acceptance rate of the new feature and how well users are interacting it on the phone before they move on to making the feature live on the desktops as well.
