News in Brief:

  • Google introduces two new courses for developers to learn Kotlin development.
  • “Kotlin Bootcamp for Programmers” and “Developing Android Apps in Kotlin” are the newly launched tutorial-based courses.
  • These courses are designed to help developers learn Kotlin to then create functional Android apps.

Since Google announced Kotlin as its official language for Android app development, its popularity skyrocketed like never before.

To nudge developers in the direction of developing apps for Android, Google recently introduced two new free courses for developers to learn Kotlin development through Google Codelabs – Kotlin Bootcamp for Programmers and Developing Android Apps in Kotlin. These two courses are tutorial based lessons and provide all the important information one must know about Kotlin.

What does “Kotlin Bootcamp for Programmers” course offer?

As per Google’s Blog this course, as the name suggests is a walk-through of the Kotlin programming language which focuses on teaching developers how to write simple statements, functional manipulation with extending built-in functions, and so on.

What will developers learn in the “Developing Android Apps in Kotlin” course?

Learning the Kotlin language with “Developing Android Apps in Kotlin” is as easy as pie. You will run through the “Hello World!” for building simple UIs to creating a complex app requesting data from a live server.

There is plenty of space that is devoted to the Android Jetpack – a toolkit used for creating Android apps that also includes components like Work Manager. As you might have anticipated, the course also focuses on libraries, also inclusive of the ones for loading images, JSON-parsing, and networking.

All lessons in these two courses, allowing developers to learn Kotlin, enable the developers to test their growing skills on an app – says Google. “In each lesson, you will work with a realistically architected app and implement key features,” – as mentioned in the company’s blog post. “For example, you start out learning how to deploy a dice roller app. You learn how to implement navigation by building the ‘Android Trivia’ game. You learn how to create a Room database by building a sleep tracker app.”

Google Promoting Kotlin Adoption

Google has been witnessed trying hard to encourage developers to opt Kotlin for Android app development. However, the battle is still on between the two most popular language choices for creating Android apps – Kotlin vs Java

A big group of developers still use Java as their primary language for this purpose, as it was the original language for the Android app development. This is evident in the survey conducted by Dice this summer in which it was noted that approximately 85% of developers choose Java instead of Kotlin.

However, there is no denying that Kotlin is gaining fame day by day. After the introduction of the two free courses to help developers learn Kotlin effectively, the day is not far when Kotlin will supersede Java is every way.
